Hurricane Season Home Readiness Checklist

A practical hurricane season checklist for supplies, batteries, gutters, exterior conditions, shutoff locations, and documentation.

Hurricane readiness is not only about buying supplies right before a storm. The better system is to keep important home details, supplies, batteries, exterior drainage, and access points organized before the season becomes stressful.

Start with household readiness

A home should have organized supplies, working batteries, accessible flashlights, basic first-aid items, and known locations for important controls.

  • Flashlights and replacement batteries
  • Chargers and backup power supplies
  • Weather radio if used by the household
  • Accessible first-aid supplies
  • Water shutoff location
  • Electrical panel location
  • Gas shutoff location if applicable

Review the exterior before heavy rain

Gutters, downspout openings, exterior doors, screens, light vegetation, and drainage paths should be reviewed before storm pressure arrives.

  • Clean safely accessible gutters and downspout openings.
  • Clear light vegetation touching the home or blocking equipment.
  • Document exterior door or seal concerns.
  • Check accessible exterior light operation.
  • Document visible loose porch, deck, or step concerns.

Keep the record current

Storm season is easier when the Home Profile already contains shutoff locations, equipment photos, supplies, and prior maintenance history.
